What are sparring gloves?
Sparring gloves which are also known as training gloves, are boxing gloves use primarily for sparring (practice fighting). They tend to be thicker and softer (to cushion the blows) then the average bag gloves. Sparring gloves are made to protect your hands when striking your training partners but also to protect your sparring partners from getting hurt as well. These gloves tend to be sold in weights ranging from 14oz to 20oz, with 16oz gloves being the standard that most people use.
Are Sparring gloves the same as Training gloves?
Yes, sparring gloves and training gloves are the same type of boxing gloves. you just have to remember their are 3 categories of boxing gloves, bag gloves, sparring gloves (aka training gloves) and fight gloves.
Bag Gloves vs Sparring gloves?
If your looking at high quality Boxing gloves there is a big difference between bag gloves and sparring gloves. Bag gloves tend to be denser, less padded, more compact almost like fight gloves. While Sparring gloves tend to be softer and have more padding. Bag gloves are made with one purpose in mind, protect your hands while hitting a punching bag, and are constructed to do so day after day with out falling apart. Sparring gloves on the other hand are constructed for a duel purpose protect your hands, and protect your sparring partners, when sparring gloves are used as bag gloves they the foam inside them tends to deteriorate quick quickly compared to bag gloves. bag gloves tend to be sold in the 8oz to 14oz range while sparring gloves tend to be sold in the 14oz to 20oz range.
Can i Use my Sparring gloves on the punching bag?
Truthfully there is nothing stopping you but if your training partners start to noticed you using your Sparring gloves to on the punching bag regularly and still using those same gloves with sparring with them, they may start to classify you as a "DOUCHEBAG" and then people will be reluctant to spar with you. The main reason for this is all in the foam Sparring gloves are not constructed to be hitting the punching bag. The foam will will break down very quickly and will not provide the protection required for sparring as your sparring partners will soon feel your knuckles each and every time you hit them and this is not good for them and not good for you hands as well. Dont be cheap when purchasing boxing gloves get one pair of gloves specifically for sparring and another for hitting the punching bag.
What makes for a good training glove? With so maybe styles of boxing gloves on the market it can be hard to wrap your head around what type of gloves you should get. First thing you have to figure out is what type of glove you need based on the combat sport are you participating in. If your primarily just boxing you may not need a glove that can easily open and close, while if you are a muay thai kick boxer being able to open and close your hands quickly during sparring sessions can be a advantageous as you may have to catch incoming kicks and work the clinch. Another thing that can be important in a pair of muay thai gloves is how much padding is on the back of the glove to protect against your training partners kicks. There are are also boxing gloves that are compact with smaller striking surfaces and there are gloves that offer much larger striking surfaces. you can get boxing gloves with a lace up or Velcro closure system. Each will have their pros and cons, And i can't tell you which gloves you will prefer as i'm not you, however i will put as much information of each of our products as poosible so you can make the right decision that suits your needs the best. Just remember you get what you pay for, if you pick up a pair of boxing gloves from wallmart for $30 don't expect them to last long. If you are serious about muay thai kickboxing, boxing or MMA then invest in a good pair of gloves.
A good pair of sparring gloves should be constructed with a leather shell, the foam should be soft enough to absorb the energy of your punches so your training patterns do get hurt, while still being thick/firm enough so that the foam can't completely compress under the pressure of your punches (you should not be able to feel your knuckles through them)
