What is the difference between a Jiu Jitsu Gi and a Judo Gi?
At one time the differences between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gis and judo gis where minimal, but in the last decade there has been some major changes to the way Jiu Jitsu Gis are made. Now a days Jiu Jitus gis tend to be made with a much slimmer cut that incorporates tighter cuffs on the pants and jacket. This allows the the Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners to benefit from a closer fit, providing less material for an opponent to manipulate, during training and competition. Unlike Judo Gis, as a manufacturer of Jiu jitsu gis we are not held back by tradition, we can freely experiment with new fabrics and designs. Consumer demand is what fuels the evolution of the Jiu Jitsu gis and we are happy to be part of the process.
I want to join BJJ but do i really need a Jiu Jitsu Gi?
Normally in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Schools a Jiu Jitsu Gi is required, but with the recent explosive growth of MMA some BJJ schools have dropped the use of the gi as they have changed their focus towards NO-GI grappling. However the use of the gi is still very beneficial for self defense as they simulate jackets and thick shirts perfectly, and they are the best tool to have for developing your balance and base when you first start the sport of jiu jitsu.
