For me, it’s the feeling of stepping onto the mats and leaving the world behind. All my worries and stresses disappear; all that matters is the roll. It’s the adrenaline rush as I lock in a submission or sweep my opponent off their feet. It’s the sense of accomplishment when I finally nail a move I’ve struggled with for weeks.
But it’s more than just the physical rush. Jiu-jitsu has taught me so much about myself and life. It’s taught me to be patient, persevere, and to never give up. It’s shown me the importance of discipline and dedication and the power of positive thinking. It’s helped me build confidence, both on and off the mats, and given me a sense of community and belonging.
And most importantly, jiu-jitsu has taught me the value of humility and respect. This art has no room for ego or arrogance – we all start as white belts and have something to learn. We bow to our training partners, tap out when needed, and treat each other with kindness and compassion.
